The Benefits of Microneedling

The secret to a glowing, beautiful, you.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (or CIT), is an all natural and effective treatment therapy that is safe for all skin types – oily, dry, normal or a combination of the three, which can help treat a multitude of skin concerns.

How does microneedling work?

Many other treatment options available may irritate, burn, or even wound the skin, such as laser and chemical peels. The microneedling treatment process at Deanna Carell Acupuncture is very gentle, painless, and involves tiny needles penetrating specific areas of the skin being treated which allows it to properly heal, produce new skin cells, increase the production of collagen and elastin, while simultaneously increasing oxygenation of the pores to help with product absorption. Our highly trained acupuncturists will start with a thorough cosmetic evaluation of your skin and specific areas of concern to be treated. Microneedling treatments are excellent for fine lines and wrinkles, post surgical scarring, aging skin and less elasticity, enlarged pores, toning, sun damage, acne scarring, rosacea, stretch marks, and hyperpigmentation just to name a few!

When will I see the effect?

The immediate effects of microneedling may cause slight redness, burning, or irritation (much like sunburn) on the treated area. This is normal and could last up to 24 hours after the treatment, depending on your skin's sensitivity. After 1 to 2 days, microneedling will reveal brighter, tightened and a much more youthful, healthy, glowing complexion after the irritation calms down. Your acupuncturist will send you home with specific skin care guidelines and product recommendations to use post treatment. For best results, we recommend a commitment of at least 3-4 sessions every 4 to 6 weeks.

Not just for the face

This collagen-boosting treatment is not exclusively for facial concerns. Microneedling is very popular in treating body areas affected by depleted skin elasticity such as the neck and décolletage. Other common treatment areas include the front and back of thighs, buttocks, neck/chest, and abdomen. The treatment typically addresses scarring, stretch marks, sun damage, or uneven skin tone.

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is safe and gentle. Our office takes pride in making our patients as comfortable as possible. Before treatment begins, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the affected area. Patients will not experience any pain or discomfort while the treatment is taking place, particularly when compared to other cosmetic procedures. However, patients on medications that

  • increase photosensitivity (such as Accutane),
  • blood thinners, or
  • anticoagulants should always consult with your physician or dermatologist specialist before treatment.

Treatment on tattooed areas is also inadvisable.

What do I need to do before/after the appointment?

Microneedling appointments typically take about an hour. During the appointment, each patient will receive thorough after-care guidelines. It is best to avoid sun exposure for three days before the treatment and about a week after the treatment. Avoid retinol and retinoids for a minimum of one week, both prior and after microneedling treatments, and do not wax, shave, or receive any chemical peels or laser treatments for two weeks before and after the treatment.

Your acupuncturist may also recommend a gentle skincare routine that will minimize irritation and maximize your results. Directly after treatment, patients should forgo exercise, saunas, make-up, jacuzzis, and cryotherapy.
