Alleviate Back Pain During Pregnancy with Acupuncture

Alleviate Back Pain During Pregnancy with Acupuncture

Get relief from back and pelvic pain through this ancient healing method!

The changes the body goes through during the process of pregnancy are profound, and pain in the low back and pelvis is a common side effect of these changes. In fact, it's estimated that anywhere from 50% to 80% of women suffer back pain during pregnancy.

As the pregnancy progresses into the third and fourth trimesters, the pain can become quite intense and may limit the mother's mobility, mood, and overall quality of life. Acupuncture presents a pain management option that is safe for both the mother and child and has been used for thousands of years to treat all kinds of pregnancy-related symptoms.

Does acupuncture help with back pain during pregnancy?

Oral and written histories document the use of acupuncture to alleviate pain during pregnancy since ancient times. Modern research is catching up too, and numerous studies have begun to validate the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating low back and pelvic pain during pregnancy.

One study comparing a group of pregnant women receiving acupuncture to a group receiving sham acupuncture treatment found that 88.9% of women in the acupuncture group experienced significant improvements.

Is acupuncture during pregnancy right for me?

Pregnancy is a unique experience for every woman and may vary for the same woman from one pregnancy to the next. Even into the fourth trimester, some women experience little to no noticeable pain. Factors such as weight, diet, and physical activity level contribute to whether and how much pain a pregnant woman will experience and any medical conditions or previous injuries that predate the pregnancy.

In general, the research shows acupuncture to be a safe and effective approach to managing pain, especially as an alternative to pain medications which could be dangerous for the baby. The side effects of acupuncture are minimal. In some cases, acupuncture has been associated with stimulating labor, so women should consult their medical provider about the risk of preterm birth.
